Out of hours provider

Category : News

As of October 2016, Herts Urgent Care has taken over from Urgent Care Cambridgeshire as the Out of hours provider. HUC were already providing the 111 service for the area. At the present time HUC are providing the service in the same locations as the previous provider. Please access all out of hours care by calling 111. Only call 999 in life threatening emergencies, for instance suspected heart attacks or stroke, uncontrolled bleeding or significant breathing problems. 111 can send an emergency ambulance if they feel it is necessary.

Chlamydia Screening

Category : GP services , News

Chlamydia is a sexually transmitted disease which can lead to infertility as well as testicular infections or pelvic inflammatory disease in women. In about 70% of people it causes no symptoms at all, although it can cause penile or vaginal discharge and pain on passing urine.

Estimates suggest that in the age range of 16-25 years of age 12-14% of people have chlamydia. Rates are so high because of the high numbers of people without symptoms. The only way to protect against transmission of Chlamydia during sex is to use condoms.

Chlamydia is very easily treated and so early detection is very important in reducing risks of complications.

There is a national screening programme for the age group of 16-25, however people outside of this range can have a test by speaking to clinical staff at the surgery or one of the sexual health clinics.

We would advise having regular checks- either yearly or with each change of sexual partner.

Please do collect a screening pack from reception if you are in the screening age. The test is either a urine test or a self taken swab.

*We are pleased to offer a free goody bag for all patients requesting a test during the first few weeks of term*

Chariots of Fire Race- 18th Sept

Category : News

Bridge Street Medical Centre are entering a team into the Chariots of Fire Race this weekend. This year the Race is raising money for Papworth Hospital.

If you would like to donate to this worthy cause, there is a collection box in reception.

The Race is a 6 person relay, each running 1.7 miles, with several hundred teams entering the race.

The team this year consists of members from all departments- Vanessa (representing the nurses), Szab (the admin team) and Drs Bakker, Hodkinson, Miller and Taylor. We are expecting an improved time on last year!

Whilst we didn’t quite beat our 2015 team we did move up the rankings this year. Our time for the team was 1 hour 14 minutes and 21 seconds with a position of 135th out of 380 teams. Of the mixed teams we came 79th out of the 265 mixed teams. Well done everyone and we will pick up the speed next year! The collection box for Papworth is still on reception for any last donations.

The practice have agreed to host a private physiotherapy service at the practice. This service is available on Mondays and Fridays. Whilst we will continue to host an NHS physiotherapist which can be accessed by referral or self referral to the Cambridge Musculoskeletal Service, some patients may wish to access private physiotherapy to avoid the NHS waiting list. For a limited time, patients of Bridge Street Medical Centre may benefit from a substantial discount for treatment for a single problem. You are able to book appointments with Heidi through the Capital Physio website, at the Cambridge City Clinic. Further information about the company can also be accessed on this site.

Louise Nightingale

Category : News , Staff

We are very disappointed to announce that Louise Nightingale has decided to leave us after very many years of exceptional service in the front and back of house. She has been a vital member of the team, who has undertaken a lot of the work that patients will not have seen, including organising the doctor’s rota (always a tricky piece of work) and the student teaching. We wish Louise every success at East Barnwell Surgery, where she joins our former Practice Manager, Debbie Parsons.
