What The NHS app does

Use the NHS App to:

  • order repeat prescriptions - see your available medicines, request a new repeat prescription and choose a pharmacy for your prescriptions to be sent to
  • check your symptoms - search trusted NHS information and advice on hundreds of conditions and treatments, and get instant advice or medical help near you
  • view your medical record - securely access your GP medical record, to see information like your allergies and your current and past medicines
  • register your organ donation decision - choose to donate some or all of your organs and check your registered decision
  • find out how the NHS uses your data - choose if data from your health records is shared for research and planning

Other services in the NHS app

If your GP surgery or hospital offers other services in the NHS App, you may be able to:

  • access health services on behalf of someone you care for
  • view your hospital and other healthcare appointments
  • view useful links your doctor or health professional has shared with you

Keeping your data secure

After you download the app, you will need to set up an NHS login and prove who you are. The app then securely connects to information from your GP surgery.

If your device supports fingerprint detection or facial recognition, you can use it to log in to the NHS App each time, instead of using a password and security code.

Patient knows best

Patient Knows Best (PKB) is a secure online service that allows you to store your health records in one place, to give you instant access to, and better control of, important information such as appointment letters, appointment details and access to a range of test results which have been undertaken at the hospital.

If you register to use Patient Knows Best, a copy of your GP record is uploaded to the Patient Knows Best platform.

This process is actioned automatically. We appreciate that the process of registering with Patient Knows Best through the NHS App may not make it clear that registering in this way can result in a copy of your GP record being shared with the platform. As data controllers for your confidential GP medical record, we therefore want to ensure that you are aware that Patient Knows Best is not part of the NHS but is owned and operated as an independent private company.

While Patient Knows Best has the necessary security measures in place to protect your information, storing a copy of your full medical record on an external system may increase the risk of unauthorised access, data breaches, or information being shared beyond NHS systems.

Your GP practice cannot be responsible for how the copy of the data is used once it has been transferred to the Patient Knows Best platform in accordance with the process initiated through your registration. If you did not intend to have a copy of your GP record uploaded to Patient Knows Best, or if you would like to remove your data from the platform, you will need to contact Patient Knows Best directly at help@patientsknowbest.com or visit the Patient Knows Best website

Your GP practice is unable to revoke your access on your behalf. If you have any questions about the process, please contact Patient Knows Best directly using the details above.
